Sago Palm Tree
(Cycas revoluta) |
Sago Palms are subtropical and are native to the far East. They have been used as a containmer plant or a landscape specimen plant for hundreds of years.
Sago Palms spread leave from an upright trunk with a "break" of new leaves. This "break" is four or more new leaves that grow vertically from the center of the plant and then spread outwards.
As Sago Palms mature, they sprout new small plants (offsets) at their base. These can be separated from the parent plant to provide new specimens.
When planting Sago Palms, the most common mistake is not anticipating the spread of the mature plant. Because Sago Palms are relatively expensive plants, they are most often purchased in small sizes. After a few years of growth, they often block sidewalks or squeeze out plants near to them. Be sure to allow for the space that will be taken by a mature plant if you are installing them in a landscape.
