Sabal Palm Tree

Texas Sabal Palm Trees can reach heights exceeding 45 feet tall and have a canopy width of up to 25 feet. Sabal Palms are popular as specimen plantings or as part of more formal groupings. Sabal Palm Trees are often described as "stately" due to their upright growth, relatively thick trunk and crowning display of foliage. When planting the Texas Sabal Palm, be sure to consider the mature size of the tree.

Sabal Palm Trees are usually hardy to temperatures slightly below 20° Fahrenheit. Sabal Palms will grow in most soil types. Sabals are also drought resistant and will grow in conditions that include wind and salt. When grown in bright sunlight, the foliage is a light green. The foliage is dark green when the Sabal Palm grows in shade or semi-shade.

The trunk of the Sabal Palm is gray in color and usually remains covered with the stems of old leaves. These form a distintive pattern on the trunk of the tree. Leaf stems on Sabal Palms are smooth and can be up to 15 feet long. Most mature Sabal Palm Trees will have 15 to 25 leaves crowning the top of the tree.
